My second hermit crab died even before I could name the the poor fella. Ain't sure what's the cause. Just few days back, I saw it coming out of it's shell. It's something that you don't see daily. I thought it was looking for a new home -new shell. And then it just stood still on the soil, even though there were 3 new shell around for it to pick from. I noticed that something was very wrong. Then I thought it might be molting -process it sheds its old exoskeleton to make way for a new one. Unfortunately, all the hopeful assumptions turned its tide on me. The poor little crab died! C.O.D still remains unkown.
I'm assuming it is a land hermit crab - what species is it? I've never seen a black crab before, I'm dying of curiosity.
As for it's cause of death, it could be any variety of reasons, beginning with poor store conditions where you bought it, to mistakes in it's home habitat. There is a lot of very poor information on the net about the care of land hermit crabs, and pet stores are even worse about knowing what they need. Some great sites for up to date info (much has been learned about the proper care of these little guys in just the past year or two) are http://www.hermitcrabparadise.com and http://www.crabstreetjournal.com
Lots of helpful people in those forums who have had their crabs for 10+years.
I highly suggest you visit if you plan to get more crabs, or have any others you want to keep alive. Good luck!
Thanks Joanna, I'll look into it!;)
